A dreamscape created from recollections of dreams by patients and staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The original intention was to provide sleep deprived hospital patients with the opportunity to share someone elses dreams via the hospital radio network. The piece is in part an homage to Barry Bermange and Delia Derbyshire's 1964 radio work, 'Inventions for Radio: Dreams'. It also includes readings of extracts from the dream diaries of artist, shamen and dream interpreter, Kate Walters,...

'The Tonic Garden' is the first programme in the 'Bedside Radio' series produced for the launch of Channel 604 (Radio Royal’s new arts channel). It was designed as an ambient radio piece with patients suffering from insomnia or tinnitus in mind. The voice interviews were initially intended just as research in this survey of soothing sounds but the descriptions and reasoning behind the choices ended up becoming an intrinsic part of the work itself. Field recordings and bespoke music are...

A selection of vintage amateur field recordings from three East Midlands tape clubs: The Derby Tape Recording Club, The Leicester Tape Recording Club and The Nottingham Co-operative Tape Recording Club. Many of these recordings were made in the days when recording on location entailed lugging a heavy and cumbersome full-size reel to reel recorder out and about with you. Outdoor recordings were often impractical but sometimes being part of a club - pooling resources and sharing knowledge, made...

In this radio feature we eavesdrop on a father and his 10-year-old son as they bond over a succession of increasingly fiddly electronic experiments - at the behest of the manual they connect wires, transistors, capacitors and diodes to create an array of weird and wonderful crackles, beeps, buzzes and other electronic noises. Harking back to the bygone days of the BBCs Radiophonic Workshop in feel, variations on these sounds form the basis of the musical score that underpins the piece,...

For many years I have been collecting found tapes; primarily voice recordings, audio letters, home karaoke and recordings made by amateur tape recording enthusiasts. I particularly enjoy the unguarded and non-deliberate parts of these recordings when people are testing the equipment or have forgotten its still recording. Almost every recording begins with the ubiquitous: testing, testing, 1,2,3. This one recurring phrase appears in my collection time and time again in an array of different...

The Derby Tape Club on BBC Radio 4 First broadcast: Monday 1 March 2004, 8.30 pm A few years ago radio producer Mark Vernon bought a hoard of old reel-to-reel audio tapes in a car boot sale in Derby, as a job lot with an elderly and very heavy tape recorder. Coaxing the old machine back to life, he realised he had rescued the jettisoned archive of the Derby Tape Club - a group of amateurs who made, played and swapped recordings in the 1960s and 70s, when domestic tape-recording was in its...

The past is often said to be a foreign country. This programme features audio postcards from some of the inhabitants. The Leicester Tape Recording Club was a club for tape recording enthusiasts active in the sixties and seventies. Like a latter day Mass Observation, amateur radio producers and documentary makers sometimes unintentionally captured the minutiae of a now surreal suburbia. A forgotten world of bri-nylon, briar pipes and tank-tops met an arcane society who spoke of tape-speeds and...
